Amsterdam Gay City

Amsterdam Citytrip

It is always a perfect time for visiting Amsterdam. Amsterdam with narrow streets ,splendid lord houses, a lot of museums, many shops and sociable bars lose an ideal destination for delicious weekendje of this superb historical city.

Amsterdam was a powerful city of maritime trade celebrity for a lot of centuries.
In second half of the 20th century it was the Gay Capital of Europe with its considered liberal environment of the city.

But with the fast liberalisation in other cities in Europe as from approximately 1995, Amsterdam lost this advantage.
From Amsterdam gay scene lost a part of its attraction which it had in the years 1980 and 1990 ,mainly under young gays.
As from 2005 efforts are made to make gay the scene in the city more gently and fresher.

Amsterdam has several gay streets which lie approximately in same erea. The most known street is, however, the Reguliersdwarsstraat, which is rather mainstream and 1990 style with the gaydisco ARC and the recent renovated bar April.
The Warmoesstraat is mainly for the leather-scene and cruising rooms , in the years 1980-style. Finally the area around the Amstel street with its different gay bars, in traditional Dutch style and environment.
The Kerkstraat has typical gay scenes also some with shops, hotels and bars. In former days there was also the night sauna had established Thermos,
but that has now moved to its day sauna in the Raamstraat.
The Spuistraat were in former days the area of the boy houses ,but by the rise of the escortservices and the Internet , the houses are (allmost) away.
Now there are a couple nice gayshops and the very polulaire gaybar PRIK .

The most of gaybars are just open as from 16.00 h (4PM) or later. The shops are already open as from 12.00 h (12AM).

Parties and Eventenementen

Today there are regular gay evenings with DJ's and particular gay activities. The most popular parties happen monthly or couple of time per year, with shows and international DJ's.

The annual Gay peaks in Amsterdam are the Queen's Day on 30 April and from Amsterdam Gay Pride with the Canal parade in august and the Leather Pride weekend in October.

In front of the Westerkerk is a homosexual monument.

Madame Tussauds waxmuseum on the Dam, the Rijksmuseum in the museum district and the sex museum to the Damrak it most popular.

But everyone knows Amsterdam by its RED LIGHT DISTRICT and the coffee shops.

Shopping and Dinner

The most of shops in Amsterdam are open each Sunday . But with the shop chains it can be that 1 establishment is open in the area.
The very large chains such as Saturn are outside downtown.

Walking in Amsterdam is possible best at foot or with the tram.
The main central station is downtown center with many transport facilities. Cars are not welcome in the center district and the car parks are one of the most expensive in the world.
There also P&R parkings exist outside the center where you can park 24 hours for 6 euro and have a retourticket for the public transport.

Hotels in the center of Amsterdam are something more expensive than outside the city.
Certainly during the special weekenden the hotels generally Full Booked .

For a meal you can best find restaurants to the Damrak and around the Leidseplein.

A special (gay) restaurant is GETTO in de Warmoersstraat ( kitchen open from 20.00 h) .
